Are there topics for which you can't
find any children's books? Let us
know and we'll help you find what
you are looking for.
Read lots of children's books
• Children's librarians are an excellent resource for favorites and award winners.
• Observe trends: if you have a particular idea, see what else is out there with a similar theme.
•
Knowing which publishers put out books with your theme is extremely helpful when you're ready to submit.
Give your work to a librarian or two
• Ask for their professional advice and think seriously about making the changes they suggest.
For self - publishing, hire a good editor
• You will need another set of eyes and someone experienced in your genre.
Don't illustrate your work or seek out an illustrator
• Most publishers prefer to find their own artist. If they like your story, they will decide how they want it pictured.
• A story with illustrations will need to pass two tests instead of just one. Why risk it?
Attend your local Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators
• www.scbwi.org - There are conferences, links, and great info.
• Attend meetings with other writers, read your work to your peers, and listen to what published writers have to say.
